Have you ever wondered… What will the fans be like at the games with the new normality? The answer is provided by the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which recently released a statement in which they specify that the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games will be somewhat different, with the implementation of Pepper and Spot robots, which will be in charge of replacing the public. This measure was put in place due to the high rates of COVID-19 infection in the country.
Robots as entertainment
During the Olympic Games, these robots will be in charge of performing short choreographies to cheer on the athletes. It should be recalled that in July 2020, these same devices were used to support the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks baseball team.
Likewise, the robot has also been used to collaborate in coronavirus containment tasks in different public places in Japan, where it has diversified its functions to take people’s temperature or to remind them to wear face masks, in addition to constantly washing their hands.
On the other hand, Boston Dynamics’ robot-dog Spot will also perform choreographies to keep up the spirits of the participants of the Olympic Games and, in addition to having collaborated in hospitals fighting the pandemic, it has also had wider uses in other areas, such as patrolling the streets of New York or military maneuvers for the French army.
There is no doubt that technology has gradually taken an important and indispensable place in our daily lives, and has become our right hand to combat both social and personal difficulties.
